extra spicy take, but for anyone with a modicum of technical ability (not time, just general knowledge and willingness to type in a passphrase every few months) matrix is a far better messaging experience in every way than signal, so long as we're talking a baseline of synapse and decent clients (fluffychat, cinny, element, that sort)server message backups, arbitrary numbers of devices, not needing a phone number, better clients, and bridges push it ahead for everything i want out of a messenger
and if you're wondering: message decryption is solved on decent servers. you can enable message backup to the server and just decrypt it with your passphrase, or you can just use device to device transfer with standard emoji verification or whatever
