@MxSpoon sure but irc doesn't have features that regular people expect from a messaging platform, matrix refuses to fix or improve fundamental issues such as moderation, and xmpp is incredibly fragmented and confusing to get into if you don't have someone to help you

I get the criticism of irc though I mostly focus on it being inherently insecure myself. For text based messaging I dunno if it really lacks anything a bpuncer doesn't provide though.
