there literally isn't a single linux distribution that I can recommend to a new person without adding a sentence long "but..."

"ubuntu is generally the industry standard but you'll be fighting canonical's dumb experiments which feels more or less the same as fighting microsoft's experiments"
"debian is ubuntu without experiments but with crustier software and packagers who think they're smarter than developers"
"fedora workstation has up to date and generally well packaged software, but they have a weird stance against packaging absolutely anything proprietary (such as drivers lol)"
"bazzite fixes that fedora issue, but it's so deviated from the standard no third party software will work right away"
"arch has actually good packaging and adheres to common sense standards, but it expects you to be your own sysadmin and architect"

@izzy it has crusty ass LTS packages, and it's hard tied to X11 which means you won't get proper support for variable refresh rate monitors, HDR or even decent multimonitor setups

@halva @izzy i'm not sure what you mean by "hard tied to X11". atm it has a very experimental wayland session and going off their blog making it more usable seems to be a priority
