rant about my experience with disability and ID one problem I have continuously faced as a disabled person that some people might not be aware of is identification. generally speaking a drivers license is the most common and accepted form of ID, at least in Australia. I'm blind which means I cannot drive a car or apply for a driver's license. to solve this my state has a photo identification card, which is identical to the universally recognized drivers license, but red. unlike a driver's license though it is hardly recognized as valid ID even though on paper it should work anywhere a driver's license does.

some examples of this causing issues:
I want to vote in an upcoming election (this is mandatory) after moving so I need to register a change of address with the Australian Electoral Commission. the AEC doesn't recognize my government issued photo ID and I need to see a Justice of the Peace (JP) to verify my ID with the AEC.
(a much less harmful one) I'm hanging out with my friends and we're having alcohol and I want to order more drinks. the service for ordering stuff needs ID, recognizes drivers licenses, but not my government issued photo ID. this makes the service impossible for me to use.
I want to apply for a vision impaired travel pass because I'm too blind to drive a car. the application form requires a drivers license or verification from a JP. the travel pass is issued by the same state government department that issues photo IDs but does not accept photo ID in the application. I go to the JP which is only available one afternoon every week and have to wait in line for 45 mins. this is absolutely exhausting and very physically painful because of some other unknown condition I have. when I see the JP she says she's never seen a photo ID, doesn't know what it is and asks to see 2 other ID that I had on me but aren't commonly accepted.

this stuff sucks so much I hate it
the only alternative IDs are a passport which is extremely expensive purely as a form of ID and not commonly accepted, or a birth certificate which is only accepted by some government departments.

re: rant about my experience with disability and ID @stella the driver's license is also issued by the same department as far as I know so there's really no excuse

re: rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes theres also like broader cultural issues with the idea of a drivers license being ones main form of identification, ones mark of adulthood, or anything like that. it normalizes a car-centric way of thinking and thats really not a good idea ...
over here everyone just gets a federal state id card and everything works fine

rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes wtf this feels so backwards to me. Here you need to be able to show id starting from age... 14 I think? We also have an ID card for this purpose that's also valid for international travel within the EU, while your drivers license is not... Though a lot of people have a drivers license and passport but no ID

rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes The fact that you need a driver’s license to apply to a vision impaired travel pass is bafflingly stupid.

rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes This isn't your fault but I don't know why some goverments only recognise a driver's license as identification. In Spain and other countries in europe we are issued by the goverment an identification card which is free and independent of if you want to drive a car or not.

Anyways, I hope it gets better for you, it seems like a pain

re: rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes What the absolute fuck, Australia?

We have the same situation over in the US (no drivers' license, do have basically-identical photo ID) and we've never had any problems.

Though this is just with like banks and package pickup and stuff, oh and elections were fine (though here those have a pre-registration system for some reason and often don't need photo ID at all, specifically to avoid Situations Like That where you can't get an ID). We've never tried to buy alcohol.

rant about my experience with disability and ID @pancakes I see this as a general problem of relying on driver's licenses as a form of ID.

As an example of how it could be done differently, let's take my home country of Germany. In Germany, everyone is required to have an ID card (Personalausweis) separate from any driver's license. This is the generally accepted and demanded form of ID. Getting a Personalausweis is not tied in any way to one's ability to drive a car.

rant about my experience with disability and ID oh yeah this also means I can't use Stripe's ID verification system that some services use at all either
this may have fucked me over with booking a hotel, hoping to hear back in the morning on if there's any other way I could possibly verify my ID
