reasons:
- the gunplay is extremely satisfying and meticulous thought was given into how every gun feels and sounds
- the characters have actual character, uniqueness, and charm
- the visual clarity and readability is like none other
- the visual design has aged like wine
- the game is customizable nearly infinitely with configs, console commands, and hud/texture/model/sound replacements
- the game has a very open philosophy (anyone can make custom maps or host custom servers long after the game is abandoned)
- the community will never die and is full of queer people and furries
- its extremely influential and new games are copying its ideas to this day
- it has one of the better f2p monetization strategies (pay to pimp, not pay to win; almost no fomo mechanics. every single gun in the entire game can be yours for the price of a can of coke)
- it runs on a potato
- it comes from an era where game developers werent terrified of their own players (alltalk, custom sprays, custom decals)
- it has no invasive anti-cheat
- its competitive side is very separate and grassroots, and does not hinder casual gameplay
- it has an almost infinite supply of content
- it has a powerful server-side scripting engine which can be used to create entirely new gamemodes
- valve regularly picks community-made maps, items, taunts, and effects to be featured in the game and gives those community members revenue for their work (map stamp purchases go 100% to the authors!)

@nano adding to the lack of mtx fomo: you could argue that taunts have some amount of fomo even though they're still cosmetic, but valve even addressed that with group taunts, which are the coolest fckn thing and it's tragic that more games haven't adopted this "premium thing you can share with everyone" idea

@ari by "no fomo mechanics" i meant there is almost nothing in the game that you cannot obtain anymore without good reason. contrary to most modern games with unlockable items, where almost every item become unobtainium after a few weeks or months of them being available (and require a ridiculous grind to obtain in the first place)

@nano ah, i see! so like, anyone opening up the game today could still get items that dropped 10 years ago. yeah that's also awesome :D

@ari ive seen a lot of people who are like "i have to nolife the battle pass to get the tier 100 skin because ill never have another chance!". companies do this on purpose so you dont play a different game. every game right now is trying to be the only game you play by forcing you to think about how much youll miss when youre gone. its gross

@nano i have watched friends crumble to pieces multiple times this past month just because they're forcing their way through shitty match after shitty match, all because they wanna get all the rewards from the pass they've already paid for

miserable and inexcusable

@ari @nano yeah battle passes are a really shitty way to force engagement. "you paid for it, don't let it go to waste"
