just had an interesting thought

what if we've (we as in everyone who's ever used it) been marketing linux to others wrong this whole time?

so, so often do i hear people say "if you're coming from windows, use this." "if you're coming from macOS, use that"
the last time i told someone the fediverse "is like twitter/tumblr but anyone can host their own", i genuinely got
laughter as a response- frankly i don't blame them!

perhaps we should be marketing not from a point of comparison, but purely by the platform's merits: for fedi, i now tell people "it's social media where you can sign up with whichever the hell site you want and use whatever the hell app you want". and as a bonus for some; "there's lots of queer nerds nerding around queerly"

as an exercise, i'm curious! for your linux distro (or even just desktop environment) of choice, what do you love most about it? what's some part (or parts) of it you think others would really enjoy?

@ari for the fedi thing, i've tried a few different explanations and either get met with confusion, disinterest or joked at. i've kind of given up.
for the linux thing i think you're probably right. personally i love arch and KDE. KDE to me feels like the most reliable DE (especially after 6.1). as for arch it's not as annoying to set up as it used to be but I wouldn't recommend it for most people.

@pancakes i personally believe the best first-time distro for a user depends on the kind of work they do:

general computing (web browsing and writing documents): linux mint
gaming: pop!_os or manjaro
workstation (basically any of the above with a little extra): fedora

if a novice user is coming from macOS, it may be helpful to swap out KDE for GNOME just to ease the transition, though if they're comfortable taking some time to learn, i agree that KDE would be a really solid choice in terms of flexibility and reliability.

@ari i know it's popular to hate on but i personally wouldn't recommend manjaro. i've had bad experiences with arch derivatives (especially manjaro)

@ari mint, pop os and fedora are good recommendations though. fedora is my go to if someone comes to me about linux (2 times now)
